The Supreme Court Won't Stop Same-Sex Marriages in Oregon

The National Organization For Marriage asked the Supreme Court to stop same-sex marriages in Oregon, as the group attempts to get an appeals court to let it defend the state's recently overturned ban. Since Oregon's government has declined to defend the ban, same-sex marriages in the state have been legal after a federal judge ruled against the ban in May. In an order issued today, the Supreme Court denied NOM's request for a stay on that ruling. The order was issued without comment. 

On Tuesday, NOM told the Supreme Court that it should intervene in the Oregon case, just like the high court did in Utah, as the Oregonian reported. However, the situations are slightly different. In Utah, the state is actively appealing the ruling that temporarily legalized same-sex marriage there, and the stay, eventually granted by the Supreme Court, is in place pending a decision on that ruling from an appeals court. NOM, however, is appealing a federal court's decision that barred it from intervening in the case in the first place, so that it can then be allowed to appeal the lower court's ruling. That hasn't happened yet, if it will at all. As of now, no one with legal standing to appeal the ruling is doing it.

 

 

 

 

Fundamentalists Protest Harvey Milk Stamp, Accuse LGBT Activist of Pedophilia

The American Family Association, self-declared champion of the “moral foundations of American culture,” boycotts many things. It protested NYPD Blue’s violent content in 1993. A few years ago, the group slammed doll maker American Girl when it sold “I Can” wristbands in support of a girl empowerment charity, which the AFA called a “pro-abortion, pro-lesbian advocacy group.” Now, the fundamentalist Christian organization has declared its next target: a postage stamp honoring LGBT rights hero Harvey Milk.

In a call to action published on its website, AFA calls Milk a drag queen and a predator.

“Harvey Milk was a very disreputable man and used his charm and power to prey on young boys with emotional problems and drug addiction,” reads the statement. “He is the last person we should be featuring on a stamp.”

The AFA fears that businesses will offer support “in the name of inclusiveness, political correctness and diversity,” declaring the move as perversity and not diversity.

To the fundamentalists' dismay, post offices across the nation now carry the stamps and many people have gladly used them to honor the LGBT hero. So what should any good Christian do, according to the AFA?

First, if your local post office offers it, refuse the Harvey Milk commemorative and “ask for a stamp of the United States flag” instead. Then, reject any mail sent to your home or business bearing the stamp. “Simply write 'Return to Sender’ on the envelope and tell your postman you won't accept it.”

The stamp was unveiled  at a White House ceremony a week after Harvey Milk Day.
